Top Ideas For New Niche Blogs In 2018
Are you looking to start a new blog? Maybe your current blog isn’t doing so well and you want a proven niche to move into?
Or perhaps your blog is already successful and you want to start on a second project!
Whatever your reason for starting a new blog, the hardest and most important place to start is always deciding what niche you’re going to start in.
We’ve all been there; knowing you want to do something and having the drive to get up and do something about it, but then comes the inevitable roadblock.
What do I even write about?
And even when you do figure out what subject matter you’re going to base your next masterpiece around, how do you know if it’ll even work?
You don’t want to spend all that time setting a blog up, writing regular posts and promoting the heck out of them; only to find out 6 months down the line that no-one gives a crap.
Today I’m going to give you a helping hand and show you 10 top ideas for new blogs in 2018.
Below, you’ll find each of my blog ideas, and the data to back them up.
I’m also going to show you how I actually went about finding these blog topics.
I’ll try to give some blogging tips on any sub-niches you could exploit, and perhaps even potential blog traffic streams to tap into (other than google).
How To Find Popular Blog Topics
The days of extensive keyword research, surveys and blindly stumbling into blog niches are dead.
With new free tools like Google Trends, you can easily find popular subjects in minutes.
Of course, you can still find keywords and popular niches using research tools like Long Tail Pro – but the method I’m about to show you is equally as useful.
All of the ideas I’m about to give you were generated using Google Trends, and here’s how:
So, without further ado, let’s get into my niche blog topic recommendations.
1. Ketogenic Dieting
This is one I’m actually considering doing.
I recently started a loosely ketogenic diet, and I would actually quite like to write about it. My only hold back here would be that I’m not an expert.
But, that probably wouldn’t stop me as I could still easily blog about my own personal experiences and new research I’d done.
With the new year approaching, health and fitness related blogs are going to be incredibly popular come January – due to all the resolutioners.
However, you need to have a sub-niche such as ketogenics, because the health and fitness blog niche is extremely competitive.
If you have time to create and launch a blog before January, a health and fitness blog may be a good option.
If I were to start a blog in this niche, these are the areas I would target for promotion:
- Health & fitness forums
To monetize this niche I would use:
- Brand sponsored posts
- Display ads
- Amazon Associates
- Third party affiliate programs
2. Electronic Cigarettes
The e-cigarette blog niche isn’t going to be one for everyone.
However, if you recently quit smoking or you already “vape” this may be a good place to start your new blogging endeavor.
Again, this is a hot niche for January due to the amount of people who quit smoking at this time of year.
If I were to start a blog in this niche, these are the areas I would target for promotion:
- Youtube
- Snapchat
To monetize this niche I would use:
- Ecommerce/dropshipping
- Amazon Associates
- Display ads
3. Legal Marijuana
Just like the previous blog topic idea, this one can be a little controversial.
But, with pot now legal in most of the United States, and with Canada looking to soon follow suit, there’s never been a better time to start a weed blog.
This is going to be a very popular topic in coming years, and so if you want to get into it, you really need a sub-niche.
I would go for one of the following sub-niches:
- Recreational
- Medicinal
- “Tech” i.e. smoking vessels
- Legality
- Connoisseur
If I were to start a blog in this niche, these are the areas I would target for promotion:
- Other weed blogs
- Snapchat
To monetize this niche I would use:
- Display ads
- Amazon Associates (smoking vessels)
This will be hard to monetize initially due to the controversy, but will gradually get easier as the topic becomes more accepted.
4. Augmented/Virtual Reality
With the release and success of Pokemon Go earlier this year, and an onslaught of VR devices being released, many developers have turned their attention to AR and VR.
To blog about it, all you’d need to do is talk about new apps that are coming out, new devices, and even different companies producing this stuff.
This niche is going to become more popular in the coming years and would be a good strategic play due to your blog being able to grow with the industry.
The only downside is obviously that technology inevitable becomes outdated and at some point you’ll have to take your blog in a new direction.
If I were to start a blog in this niche, these are the areas I would target for promotion:
- Big media outlet guest posting
- Youtube (reviews)
- Google+
To monetize this niche I would use:
- Display ads
- Amazon Associates (big money for a review site)
Monetizing with Amazon will be hard work, but could prove lucrative if you’re consistent and work hard.
5. Gaming
Youtube gaming channels along with the rise of Twitch and other streaming services have provided a huge boost to the gaming niche in recent years.
If you’re already an avid gamer, playing and reviewing games on a blog could be your next big move.
The niche is only set to expand and while it is competitive, the extremely large consumer size makes it viable for even the newest bloggers.
If I were to start a blog in this niche, these are the areas I would target for promotion:
- Big media outlet guest posting
- YouTube (gameplay and reviews)
To monetize this niche I would use:
- Display ads
- Adsense (in combination with YouTube)
- Sponsored posts
One of the downsides to this niche is that a lot of your audience is going to be very young. You may have issues with explicit content, and they’re often not going to be able to cough up money for products. Therefore, passive advertising, or brand advertising where you get paid per click/view is probably the best way to go.
6. Cake
I have no idea why “Cake” has had a such a huge boost in searches in the last couple of years – but that doesn’t matter.
If you’re an avid baker, or already have a food/baking blog; it’s time to start taking your slice of the cake blogging niche.
You don’t necessarily have to base your whole blog around cake (well, you could) but writing more posts about cake could give you a boost.
The niche is only set to expand and while it is competitive, the extremely large consumer size makes it viable for even the newest bloggers.
If I were to start a blog in this niche, these are the areas I would target for promotion:
- YouTube
To monetize this niche I would use:
- Display ads
- Sponsored posts
Surely there are only so many different ways to make a cake? You may run out of content, but I don’t know, I’m not a baker! are you a baker? Let me know!
7. Pizza
Now we’re talking.
I LOVE pizza.
Pizza is a very broad topic to base a blog on though. And just like cake, there are finite ways to prepare pizza, and seemingly finite combinations of toppings.
However, you could always settle into a nice sub-niche.
For example, my friend Gavin, has a blog based around pizza ovens.
Gavin outlines how he’s created traffic for the pizza blog on his personal blog – as well as other great tips.
If I were to start a blog in this niche, these are the areas I would target for promotion:
- YouTube
- Other blogs
To monetize this niche I would use:
- Display ads
- Brand sponsored posts
- Amazon Associates
- Third Party Affiliations
The pizza blog niche comes with the same limitations as a cake blog – make sure you pick a decent sub niche that allows you enough content to write about consistently!
8. Fruit
Food has definitely become more and more popular as a search topic over the years (check out “Salad”) too – so this is the last one I’ll list here.
Again, fruit is a very broad topic, so you’ll want to really niche down to find a more specific blog topic.
You could look at fruit in a number of ways:
- Health & fitness (duh)
- Weird Fruit
- Local Fruit
- Organic Fruit
- Unusual uses for fruit
You’ll want to do individual searches for trends on each of these sub-niches.
If I were to start a blog in this niche, these are the areas I would target for promotion:
- Other blogs
To monetize this niche I would use:
- Display ads
- Brand sponsored posts
- Amazon Associates
- Third Party Affiliations
Fruit is such a broad topic that you need to find something more specific to write about. Make sure you repeat the Google Trends search on your chosen topic before starting.
Otherwise, you could be stuck with a lemon (pun intended) that doesn’t fit the trend of the rest of the topic.
9. Sleep
Everyone loves a good night’s sleep.
Better sleep equals better productivity, which equals more work done is less time which equals more money with less work – and therefore more time not working.
Sleep seems to have become a hot topic recently, and just like keto, you don’t have to be an expert to write about it.
Anyone can simply read up on ways to improve sleep, try them out and then document their experiences.
You can give advice to the world online, in the exact same way you would tell your best friend how great your new pillow is over a Tuesday morning coffee.
If I were to start a blog in this niche, these are the areas I would target for promotion:
- Forums
- Quora
- Other places where people ask for advice
To monetize this niche I would use:
- Display ads
- Brand sponsored posts
- Amazon Associates
- Third Party Affiliations
The monetization is starting to look pretty similar across the health and wellness topics.
10. Watches
My best guess on why this topic has become exponentially more popular over the last couple of years is due to two things;
- Evolution in tech and the rise of smart watches
- Evolution of individual companies and innovation in materials (wooden watches for example)
As a fashion blogger, you may wish to focus more on watches in future posts, or maybe you could even start a blog completely based around watches themselves.
If I were to start a blog in this niche, these are the areas I would target for promotion:
- YouTube (reviews)
To monetize this niche I would use:
- Ecommerce/dropshipping
- Brand sponsored posts
- Amazon Associates
- Third Party Affiliations (MVMT for example)
Monetization of watches could be pretty lucrative. There are a lot of different manufacturers out there, and watches can get pretty pricey.
Watch fanatics are often avid collectors and will happily buy A LOT of watches, making it a good niche to be in.
